Carole Talon-Hugon is Professor of Philosophy at the Department of Philosophy, University of Nice (France), member of the Institut Universitaire de France, President of the French Society of Aesthetics, Director of the Nouvelle revue d’esthétique and of Noésis.
Her fields of study are, on the one hand, aesthetics but on the other the whole question of emotions, notably the theories of passion in the classical period. Apart from numerous articles concerning these two domains she has published: on the subject of the passions: Les passions rêvées par la raison. Essai sur la théorie des passions de Descartes et de quelques uns de ses contenporains [Passion dreamed by Reason. Essays on the theory of passions by Descartes and some of his contemporaries] (Paris, Vrin, 2002), as well as Les Passions [The Passions] (Paris, Armand Colin, 2004) and, on the subject of aesthetics : L’Esthétique [Aesthetics] (Paris, Puf, 2004, 4th republication 2014) or, on the Avignon theater festival, Avignon 2005. Le Conflit des héritages, [The Conflict of legacy] (Nîmes, Actes Sud, 2006 ; republication 2017). These two paths of inquiry cross in her current work. Thus, joining reflections on art and the emotion, she has become interested in the question of disgust in the aesthetic experience and of the predilection for the abject in certain contemporary art forms. She published Goût et dégoût : l’art peut-il tout montrer ? [Taste and Disgust. Can art show it all ?] (Nîmes, J. Chambon, 2003), a reflection on the emotional limitations of esthetics. She is at present working on the relationship between ethics and esthetics, and more precisely the ethical implications of art. She published Morales de l’art [Art Ethics] (Paris, Puf., 2009), was co-editor with P. Destrée, of Le Beau et le bien. Perspectives historiques [Beauty and Good. An historical perspective] (Nice, Ovadia, 2011), editor of a special issue of the Nouvelle Revue d'Esthétique "Ethiques d'artiste" (Paris, Puf., 2011) and of a book of translations : Art et éthique. Perspectives anglo-saxonnes [Art and Ethics. Anglo-saxon positions] (Paris, Puf, 2011). She is also working on the history of the occidental idea of art, and published on this topic L’Art victime de l’esthétique [Art as a victim of aesthetics] (Paris Hermann, 2014) and Histoire philosophique des arts [A philosophical History of Arts] (Paris, Puf) : L’Antiquité grecque (2014), Moyen-Age et Renaissance (2014), Clacissisme et Lumières (2015), Modernités (2016). She directed the dictionary Les Théoriciens de l’art [Art theoreticians] (Paris, Puf 2017).
